Having only ever played one game of Alamaze before, I don't know if the borders of the regions shift from game to game. It would make sense from a 'making it fun' perspective.
Are cities always in the same region? If the region borders do shift about from game to game, are there guidelines for their shape? (I'm assuming that the Southern sands never becomes a long elongated north-south shape etc.
I think that whether or not the shape changes from game to game would affect opening strategy in some way. How do the early moves have to cater for the shape of regions, or is it generally not a big factor?

The borders don't move (I don't think) and the cities are locked. The pcs and unusual sightings are random. It's up to you to determine where the actual borders are.
It's not a big factor, I don't think.

Each scenario has a default map. A map may be the default for more than one scenario. Each different map may have different areas in different regions - effectively changing regional borders. Sometimes cities move from one region to another with a different map.
I choose whether to use the default map for the scenario as part of specific game creation, or to pick another one of the seven or eight maps that are available. I expect the default map will always be used, but for a change of pace if things seem stale this may be revisited.

Ooh. I like the idea of changing it up from time to time.

I always liked the map where Synisvania spread from Zarathon to Almarien and was in the north.

I like the notion of change-up as well. It would be fun not knowing for sure what Region Zarathon/Avalon are located...

Agreed. But only because Rick Reed said so. I think the two "bonus cities" should always be, at the least, a coin toss to see what region they fall into. It would certainly make the initial negotiations that much more fun.
