Younger than you, a bit, yes.  And a late start to college as well.  The year was 1993 and I had just completed 6 years in the Corps, (and a year of screwing around afterwards trying to decide what to do).  Despite the late year for it, I did take a class in fortran, with a very old and very entertaining man.

He explained the difference between a command and a statement in a way I will never forget.

Statement:  Gee, I sure would like a steak for dinner tonight dear...  (might happen, might not happen)
Command:  George, go empty the garbage.  (I put down my martini and take out the garbage, every single time)
