I am sort of a newbie when it comes to diplomacy, so I have a simple question: when you have full diplomacy, is it limited to the forum, or can you correspond with a potential ally behind the scenes, like by email or phone?

Actually, Full Diplomacy is old school. Make alliances or not, deals or not, communicate how and when you wish, including post cards if you wish. We just frown upon ganging up or forming teams for the length of the game, since we have team games for folks who want to do that.
I will take Mythgar

Strylian asked me to pick for him as he's at work and for some strange reason requested The Diamond Coast. Hopefully, somebody other than the chair will hear this request.

I wonder if when this draft is complete, one of our more statistically oriented players would like to lay out the selection order average for each region.
What I mean, is, are The Crown Islands averaging being picked fourth in drafts? That kind of thing. Maybe also which regions are winning the most.
I think there has been a gravitation toward the early selection of The Capital Regions lately. If that is the case, I think it is related to the majority of strategy among players in any region now being to grow their capital town's region, and so if then (if there is no early conflict), why not have a bigger region to begin in? Of course in the design, the capital regions still have lots of border regions that could threaten if so inclined, whereas the four corner regions and otherwise non-central regions have that natural protection.
It to me still seems ok, as in if you want a Capital Region, and so you select in the top 3 or 4, you are also picking 10-12 among kingdoms.
I'm not sure if it is highly correlated with the move to not have alliances or NAP's, but early aggression seems less common. I'm not even suggesting this is bad, just an observation.
It seems we also have seen an early enthusiasm in Maelstrom for Devout kingdoms to something of a resurgence of mage kingdoms. Again, just impressions - I don't have the actual stats.

I can take a look at that. I think the corner regions have generally been picked sooner, but will check. Also, I think there is less overall early aggression, but there is almost always someone who moves fast, but that has always been true.
Oh, Brek, wherefore art thou Brek?
