Order site down?
#51
Yes, I have spoken with Mike and think he is the only one that knows the Alamaze code and server technology adequately to do a migration, so I need him to do it.

I know Alamaze players pay more than they would for other games like Warcraft, but the irony is we don't really make much of a profit given the present player base.  So say $5000 for the migration to a new server is not insignificant.  Again, I have had hosted servers proudly since 2003 just so players could rest assured my hard drive wasn't going to fail and wreck the games.  Its been over $60,000 in that time to Softlayer and its predecessor The Planet.

I am considering bringing the box in house to not spend another $60k, but I kind of don't want the risk.  Its just as I said though, hosting companies don't do what I thought.  They explained that basically what they do is ensure connectivity.  Expensive for that.

So we will do a migration if Mike is willing, and I will open my checkbook, though it would take more than a year to recoup financially unless we increase the player base.  I have to think about remaining in a hosted environment, or taking a bought server in house.  In a migration, we may keep running on the existing server and test on the new server, but we may be down for a week or two.  I suppose that would mean extending renewal dates for that time: another cost.  I will advise when the time comes.

Anyway, sorry to whine, I thought we were in good hands and it was expensive for me.  But now we have to take new steps to keep Alamaze and whatever else lies beyond going.  I'm asking for no one to abandon us during this time.

Ralf is about to finish up the professional version of my Maelstrom map draft.  I have made progress organizing the Maelstrom revisions, though not the kingdoms as of yet.  I think with all the changes, but still recognizable easily as Alamaze, it will create all new challenges and opportunities.

Here's an off the wall idea: Have you considered creating a Kickstarter for the Maelstrom?

https://www.kickstarter.com/learn?ref=nav

Tie the new server into the Maelstrom and set a realistic funding goal. As far as I know they do not charge you anything unless you successfully fund. If you fund, they take 5%.
Worst case is that it doesn't fund but you get a bunch of eyeballs on your project and it drives folks here to see what its about. I would even suggest highlighting the FREE DUEL offer on the Kickstarter Page so they can get a free taste of what the game is like.

I have never run my own project but I have backed dozens of them.

Here is a link to the currently live "games" projects: https://www.kickstarter.com/discover/cat...state=live

bringing the server home and lowering your cost seems like a good idea to me. You will likely care for your own product much more than a hosting site anyway. By not paying for drive space you could also remove one of the more annoying things to players, mid game update. If each game had its own copy of the main processing part of the game. Then updates would effect future games but not current games running. Once a game has started the settings/code would be locked

Really I just hope to see Alamaze continue running as smoothly as possible.

Not sure if on purpose or not. But game 552 we all selected ready early this morning, but received no turns. It looks like the turn did not process because the order checker is still asking for the current turns orders even after re logging in.

Also the all games button so not working on the order checker.

542 was pushed back 3 days as well. I believe but I could be wrong, they have pushed all turn processing back while they clear through this.

Yes, I asked Mike to move deadlines back 3 days and I guess 542 is the last game started not Ready Enabled.

Well, I actually prefer if all games were suspended until the new system is up and running.

The reason: Alamaze files may become corrupted at any point due to the infected server which will prevent those game(s) from being carried over to the new system. It's safer to preserve a known and valid copy of the gaming environment (like I did this morning as of 8:30am EST) rather than roll the dice every day hoping that the games aren't ruined. If they are, they won't be able to continue on the new server. I won't copy over infected files so people submitting orders or the game executing turns after the last restore point may not carryover to the new server.

So it's better if we stopped all games for approx. 2-3 weeks during the migration effort to a new system. That would result in a smoother transition and players would just pick up the next turn from today's restore point.

But the migration itself is still up in the air of which direction to take: (1) keep using the current host and wipe the disk clean with a new operating system, (2) transfer over to a new hosting site that's cheaper (like BlueHost or another with a good rating), or (3) move Alamaze to Rick's own pc at his home but pay $5000 for the hardware of a new computer and network connection, etc.

In just about all cases, Fall of Rome will be permanently lost. I am not aware if there is a backup or even how to access FoR's files across the 3 servers where it resides so that may be slowing down the decision to move forward with the migration. Could ask the hosting company to create a backup of the entire drive on all 3 servers but that will also include Trojans and other bad guys. In any case, those backups won't be allowed to be moved to the new system or it'll infect it as well. Also, I don't know if the hosting company will provide a hard copy (DVD) as a backup option since a given drive may have 200GB worth of data which is a lot of DVD's.

So tough decisions all around. Feel sorry all of this happened but there may be little choice moving forward from here.

BTW, I'm not asking for money to do the upgrade. Only asking that the game queue website comes back to automate that aspect of the game. Alamaze needs to become fully automated which requires a game queue so why not move forward with it? Even though it was up for only half a week, it created 3 games and allowed 8 people to drop from their games. All done without a problem.

Anyway, lots to consider...

I ask that my monthly payment date freeze as of 2 days ago when this trouble started.

Mike and I will have to discuss options off line.  I need to evaluate staying with a hosted server vs. just buying one and having it in my office and assume those risks about connectivity.

Meanwhile, players that waited until hours before a deadline and at the wrong time of day over Sunday - Tuesday to have suffered more than an outage, i.e., a missed turn.   We're not suspending anything yet.   If we do, I would hope players understand I am way out of pocket to keep Alamaze going and players would want to support the effort, and I have always done the right thing by players, developers and people at large.  No one would make a case against me. Its kind of how you feel about having a small gaming community and playing Alamaze I suppose.  If its just an option easily replaced, I guess yeah, you could play HW that hasn't changed in 20 years and is by snail mail at $10 a turn, or just a different computer game vs. AI.  If you want to see Alamaze and whatever is next go on, I'd hope for some support.  Again, does someone think these recent events are my fault? I am Doctor Evil and initiated the Global Cyber Attack.
