TY
Per request, I engaged in a grand battle with the Amazons. The Amazons had better leaders and it seems like his brigades had more veterans. Sadly, his special combat maneuver worked (flanking), while mine did not (night attack) and I ended up with the crappy default battle plan. Mine should have worked (details to follow), and it seemed like a close battle as you read through it, but then the end results of losses do not seem in line with the text of the battle. So, two things to check, UM. First, it says my Night Attack failed because it requires 2 or more veteran kingdom brigades. In the setup to the battle, I clearly have 2 veteran Tyrant brigades. Again, the default is a standard battle plan, not at all what I would have chosen. Like a previous battle, I would have attacked on a 3 as my alternative if the chosen one failed, but I saw no reason for the Night Attack to fail. All of this led to an early retreat and defeat .Second, the fight seems well-matched according to the text of the battle, but the end results are very one-sided. If this is mostly because of Retreat, then see issue #1 above .Reports of our Military engagements: Battle between the 1st Tyrant army group and the 1st Amazons army group in the plains of area WH: Tyrant Amazons Commanders Marshal Lockgorge Warlord Cole General Korall Warlord Wandiak Captain Neusod Commander Buckhart Wizards Power-4 Viperfield Power-3 Rikalia Power-2 Hellsport Power-2 Fairborn Brigades 2 Tyrant Veteran 6 Amazons Veteran 3 Tyrant Regular 2 Amazons Regular 2 Trolls Green 2 Wildlings Veteran 1 Orcs Veteran 2 Wildlings Regular 4 Westmen Regular 4 Westmen Veteran 4 Westmen Green 1 Westmen Regular 1 Warg Riders Veteran 2 Westmen Green Combat Factors Superior Leaders Grand Leaders Light Attrition Tactical Selection Standard Battle Plan Flanking Attack In the first hour of morning, the 1st Tyrant army group advanced upon the advancing lines of the 1st Amazons army group under Warlord Cole. Among the Tyrant troops were brigades of Trolls Green, Orcs Veteran, and Warg Riders Veteran, which now leaped ahead to the first ranks! Among the Amazons troops were brigades of Wildlings Veteran and Wildlings Regular, which now raced to the front lines! Knowing that their liege had declared the Amazons to be hostile to their nation, the Tyrant troops were invigorated and benefited from increased morale as they prepared to fight their declared enemy! Knowing that their liege had declared the Tyrant to be treated as an enemy of their nation, the Amazons troops were invigorated and had their morale raised as they prepared to meet their declared enemy! As the most important group of their nation, the troops are visibly bolstered by the presence of the first Tyrant's banner! As the most important group of their history, the fighters are visibly heartened by being under the first Amazons's colors! As the attackers advanced through the green fields, the first missles sang out. - Archers - The Tyrant effective archers and the effective archers of the Amazons force initiated their attack. The large shields of the Westmen troops within the 1st Amazons reduced opposing missile damage. The Tyrant ranks caused minor losses upon the Amazons ranks while the Amazons dealt out minor casualties to their foes. Missilers from both sides joined the fray and fired their arrows. The Tyrant ranks inflicted minor casualties upon the Amazons forces as the Amazons imposed minor losses to their foes. - Magic - Tyrant conjurers dismounted barely beyond the range of defending bowmen and began an incomprehensible spell. Power-4 wizard Viperfield muttered a few words in a foreign tongue, with chilling ease he fired many volleys of phantasmal forces and deadly pyrotechnics into the heart of the enemy force. Power-4 wizard Viperfield made a series of intricate gestures. His magic caused illusionary sounds and sights to confuse his foes and confound their commanders: The presence of an opposing warlord prevented the chaos spell's effects! Power-2 wizard Hellsport began sorcerous incantations in an unknown tongue. A faintly visible blue shimmering began to surround the troops and noticeably lessened the effectiveness of the arrows of the defenders. Amazons conjurers dismounted barely beyond the range of defending bowmen and began an incomprehensible spell. Power-3 wizard Rikalia incanted in a low forceful tone, with awe-inspiring precision he launched many phantasmal forces and deadly pyrotechnics into the heart of the enemy force. Power-3 wizard Rikalia began sorcerous incantations in an unknown tongue. A massive ball of fire sped toward the main ranks of the enemy and exploded! Power-2 Wizard Fairborn slowly spoke in an arcane language, gestures building to a crescendo. He then created a powerful warding, which would protect the heroes and wizards of his force from the black magics of any opposing spellcasters. To the satisfaction of their foes, the Tyrant forces succumbed to greater than expected losses by the magical attacks cast against them due to their vulnerability to battle magic. The Tyrant ranks claimed light casualties upon the Amazons ranks in return, the Amazons inflicted minor damage to their foes. - Artifact - By raising the Golden Spear of Lerix, Amazons Warlord Cole infused his troops with boldness while the Tyrant leaders grew concerned as the magical spear slew enemy forces. Amazons Warlord Cole displayed the Bow of Heracles for all to see, his troops thus encouraged multiplied their efforts and the enemy's leaders quaked as the magical bow slew enemy forces. The presence of the Green Dragon mates, Tornad and Sylva, invigorated the Amazons forces as they slew enemy forces with their acid dragon breath. Tyrant Marshal Lockgorge displayed the Axe of Farin for all to see, his troops thus encouraged multiplied their efforts and the enemy's leaders quaked as the magical axe slew enemy forces. - Cavalry - The outcome of the battle was still very much in doubt. The Amazons's cavalry swept around the left flank of the Tyrant, and successfully flanked them, disrupting their lines, and command structure. The charge was doubly effective and the Tyrant would be hard pressed to make an organized retreat should it be necessary. Bolting ahead to meet the riders of their foes were both the Tyrant riders and the Amazons horsemen. The Tyrant ranks dealt out light damage upon the Amazons forces in return, the Amazons dealt out significant casualties to their enemy. - Infantry - The engagement favored the Amazons kingdom clearly now, and their troops seem indomitable. Now the time had come for the main body of each force to clash. The Tyrant ground forces advanced forward to meet the Amazons ground forces in close quarters. The Tyrant lines inflicted light losses upon the Amazons lines as the Amazons imposed minor damage against the enemy. - Combined - Hour after hour passed, yet none could tell which side would be the victor since both forces were evenly matched. Despite all that had preceded at this moment, the battle outcome was still in doubt. Now all remaining troops of all types hurled themselves into the thick of battle to settle matters in decisive fashion. The battle continued long past all expectations. By now, the full remaining compliment of each force had been hurled into the fray, feverishly struggling and bleeding these long hours seeking the glory of victory. The Tyrant remaining troops defied the Amazons remaining troops for the final battle. The Tyrant ranks caused minor damage upon the Amazons forces while the Amazons caused noticeable casualties to their enemy. - Conclusion - Losses to the Tyrant had risen above expectations: Marshal Lockgorge ordered the retreat. The Tyrant leaders did a remarkable job in exiting the field with minimal additional casualties. Tyrant casualties were put at 41.30%. Unfortunately, the Tyrant Captain Neusod was found dead in the vanguard with many wounds. Tragically, the Tyrant Power-2 Hellsport died of his wounds. The toll of battle has lowered the group's morale. Amazons casualties were put at 7.67%. All Amazons leaders survived the battle. Buckhart demonstrated tactical awareness and has been promoted as a Marshal. All the Amazons wizards survived the fray. The troops are anxious for more victories: morale is up! Results of our Military maneuvers: 1st Tyrant Was unable to execute the Night Attack Maneuver. Not all criteria required for the tactic were met so a Standard Battle Plan was executed. Reason: Night attack is only valid for groups that have two or more Veteran or higher kingdom brigades.

I would simply add that there was nothing about the Amazons Archer kingdom trait during the Archers phase and that even though the Amazons achieved Flanking that the Tyrants were able to exit the battle field without a problem. I did achieve several Elite brigades so that seemed to be working ok. I didn't find the results too far out of line given that I achieved Flanking, had a fire strike against a magic vulnerable kingdom, and achieved greater damage in Artifact phase (3 to 1), cavalry phase, and combined phase. But it would appear that the Night Attack failed when it shouldn't have.
It could be that when the Tyrant forces thought about all those beautiful Amazon women, bobbing up and down on their horses....... up and down.......up and down....... across the plains that they were "distracted" from obeying their Night Attack orders.
02-01-2016, 06:35 PM
how does one get a night attack off if the other groups issues an attack order as well. in this case it looks like the Tyrant actually initiated the conflict. Nice of the amazons to wait until night time I guess.
anyway I did see it mention winter attack in my NE battles this turn and but did not notice all the special abilities of my brigades. I specifically split them up so I had at least 3 of different types. my battles also mentioned something about his war machine doing double damage seemed odd since he was surprised in the attack and did not issue a barrage tactic.
02-01-2016, 06:57 PM
I, the Amazons, also issued a 110 order. Perhaps that is why their Night Attack failed.... the Tyrant couldn't set the time of day when both sides issued a 110 order? If so, it should indicate that in the write-up.

Holy Hallucinations Batman, my first group had three battles when I was expecting one. Positioned opposite the Black Dragon army, I expected my Dwarven army group to win solidly and it did. I did notice some glimmering of invisible groups on the previous turn, but was not sure how to prepare for an unguessable enemy (2 different necromancer groups as it turns out), so I just ignored the glimmering. Both necro groups surprised my troops, but like the amazing dwarves they are, they still crushed all enemies. Barrage attack seems to have worked correctly and certain specialty things like Wildlings doing better in winter, all seemed to work right. Maybe you did this somewhere, but it would be cool to give a list of levels of damage, like what is minor versus negligible versus appreciable versus substantial, not maybe the numbers but at least the order.
The Necro groups surprised the Dwarves, but when the Necro groups retreated, they were accused of being surprised and appear to have taken greater losses on retreat because of that. I did find it interesting that my leaders promoted between battles so my second battle received the benefit of an improved leader. BIG LESSON LEARNED: DO NOT FILL ALL 10 OF YOUR TROOP SLOTS. I HAD NO ROOM FOR DWARVEN REGULARS TO PROMOTE TO DWARVEN ELITE. The issue was that the code was checking for the two veteran kingdom brigades incorrectly (not just with Night Attack but also Fight To The Last). Fixed both and reran it on my test machine to see the difference in battle. Not much actually. Without Night Attack: 1AM took 7.67% damage 1TY took 41.30% damage With Night Attack: 1AM took 8.58% damage 1TY took 32.09% damage Interesting that without Night Attack, the 1TY withdrew but in my additional test run (with Night Attack working), neither group withdrew and the battle just ended (which means it ran the full course without either group reaching their retreat threshold). A rare occurrence which is stated in the report as: "Forces on both sides of the battlefield were exhausted and left the battle without either side withdrawing." Another interesting effect of the 1AM not withdrawing is that then the 1TY couldn't attack or parley the pc due to the new 3rd Cycle rule of (printed on turn report as): "No combat or similar action against this population center is possible since not all of the pc owner group(s) had retreated from battle at this location." So glad to see that's working as designed. I fixed the issue of not counting veteran kingdom brigades correctly so the next Night Attack or Fight To The Last attempt will work. This was a good battle for Ry Vor to review and analyze...

TY
Yep, that would be a much better turn result. Then I would have lost fewer troops, lost less morale, and taken the pop center also. But it was a great battle. Never seen one go the distance without a retreat. Sadly, the TY cannot stand up to the combined might of the AM and UN armies, emissaries and agents working together, so if the game were to keep going, I would have to grab allies and make it a team game. Reminds me of why I mostly plan Anon games now. Will there be anon games in 3rd Cycle?
