I agree about the NAPs even when I try to avoid then they just keep coming. always hard to say no to a NAP because others then figure you must want to attack them soon.

I do see a difference in the game overall. Most likely there would have been some kind of clash in R8 with a few trying to get some lands early until the GI moved in and would be forced to work deals with the would be poachers. For sure much less early alliances and game long deals compared to a standard type game. as far as the REX goes it could be very hard but still possible if multiple kingdoms are allowed to have two regions.

The Dwarven Lords of the Talking Mountains

The council chambers had been quiet for what seemed an eternity as the King pondered the communications being received by other races and the news emanating from the distant lands of Alamaze. He had earlier received his monthly reports from his advisers and seemed to be in an ebullient spirit, however he now seemed somewhat perturbed by the messages delivered by riders and ravens from distant lands.

"Dire news, your grace?", inquired Karizan.

The King looked up with an expression that might have expressed anger, were it not for the slight smile that betrayed his amusement with something.

"The Drow have proclaimed our town in the Steppes to have no value to us, and they've given us four seasons to vacate it."

Some mild laughter mixed with murmurs filled the chambers as the King's privy council waited anxiously for his anticipated orders.

"That's a curious manner in which to open a dialogue with one's neighbour," started Count Oraz, "I suppose the Drow wishes to make acquaintance with our dear General Roridon." General Roridon smiled, his hand loosely caressing the hilt of his sword. "However, it may be premature to assume an aggressive posture, as with most nations they are only looking to consolidate control of a region. The Drow could be a dangerous foe, or an important ally, we must tread carefully."

"The Drow King has offered us his town in the Mountains in exchange," the King replied, "and I suspect intended no offense. Fetch my quill and prepare a rider to make haste to the Steppes."

DW-DA
Lord of the Dark Elves,

If any Dwarven possessions are to be peacefully ceded in Alamaze it shall only be through negotiation, not unilateral action. We will accord your people in the Mountains the same respect. As it stands, we see value in holding our town in the Steppes, and any unilateral action to take it will be an act of war that will bring forth the full might of the Dwarven army. If you're able to accept our continued presence in the Steppes then you will have taken a good first step forward towards a peaceful coexistence with the Dwarves.

Hail King Gnomethrower!

We admit that we weren't totally sure about the city deal and didn't have time to clarify. So an emissary was dispatched to Evanon just "to keep an eye on things". Everything looks as we had intended it to look, so it's all yours and our emissary will do nothing more than sample the ales and women of Evanon. If you happen upon a peaceful little village in Arcania flying our banner it would be real nice if you didn't stomp all over it.

And just remember, you can trust a Gnome about as far as you can throw one. Wait, that doesn't really work for you, does it? To be clear, you can trust a Gnome FAR less than YOU can throw one. Like one foot maximum. I bet you could throw one of the disgusting little things about one HUNDRED feet, right? And you can't trust them anywhere even close to that much. Hey! That's a great idea for when we next get together at your court or mine. You throw the Gnome when I yell "Pull!" and then we'll see if I can hit it with this new spell I'm working on.

Hail King Sciss.., uh, I mean Swordhand

We have a lovely little town in Synisvania. The Red Mage would love to keep that town since it will offer some income and much needed food during those pesky winter months that affect us so badly up here in the Great White North. Let me know if you think some kind of trade is in order to make this proposal worth your consideration.

BTW, What is that smell in your court? Have you been talking to Gnomes?

To the Red Warlock,

Our sources have informed us that you appear to have taken offense at our overtures of friendship to the Great King Stonethrower, and our desire to reinforce the importance of honoring agreements.

While we were gladdened to hear that your actions toward the Giant city of Evanon were the result of a simple misunderstanding rather than hostile intent, and can even understand that your own embarrassment at making a mistake there could result in a desire to look for a scapegnome, we do not believe slander and calumny against us are an appropriate response.

Please let us know whether you intend for this to be a passing phase which we can get past, or whether these are darker portents that imply hostility between our two great Kingdoms. We will assume silence equals the latter, and respond accordingly this very month.

If, however, you desire to reaffirm that our Kingdoms are at peace, we are welcome to hearing that.

Sincerely,
Bottlenose, for the Gnomish Alchemical Monarchy

I think some kingdoms are better suited to the long run "status points game" looks to me like if they can maintain a balance in the game board and make this last 40 turns then they will win by lion's share.  Very interesting.

Indeed!  My clever friend the Ancient Ones have devised a way to retain at least some level of secrecy, provided that a common point of reference is available.  Sadly, I do not have any such common points of reference, unless you happened to stumble across any of my own holdings?  As we discussed, I stuck to the west and the northeast, and the northern mountain range.

One piece of information that would not be given away (well, given away any further, anyway) is the Giant village in the corner of the world.  Would that be of interest to you as the village?

If we have no other common point of reference, then I would still be eager to know the location of whichever town you prefer to disclose, as that might make the difference for swift control over the region.

I have not discovered any of your holdings at this point - I'm certain that will change soon(wait, did I say that out loud?).  So it appears this exchange will need to be in code.  You will find at town at the headquarters of Zoltan Industries.

My preference would be for a neutral village, as it can be more quickly brought under my banner.  Also my political corps is comprised of losers that couldn't make it as agents - they might faint if I told them to go take something away from Giants.

Shadow Master,

Understood. I hear that company has a farming subsidiary which is Very Industrious, and moreover much less threatening to your politicians, perhaps, than a Giant village.

This month, I intend to search nearly the entire southern mountain range, the northern desert, and some of the central plains. If you could finish off the eastern desert and the stub of plains to the desert's east, as well as the eastern and central forest and the eastern and central swamp, I believe that should probably leave us in very good shape.

At your leisure, could you resend the current agent availability for this upcoming month? Many thanks, my friend!

Any issue with me using Zoltan Industries as a way point to get my emissaries out of the corner of Runnimede?  Are there any army's stationed at that Town that would prevent such travel?

Lord Bottlenose,

I would say that you are being thin-skinned about the communications you might have been eavesdropping on, but everyone knows that Gnomes have rather thick and oily skin. And smelly.

But no, the Red Warlock has no intentions whatsoever of launching any efforts in Runimede. The whole region has an odor to it that we find quite offensive. I have initiated a research project at the College of Magic to create an effective disinfectant for odeur de Gnome, but to date there have no breakthroughs. So you are positively safe for now - at least from us. Can't speak for the Trolls or Giants - races that have proven in the past that they really have no ability to distinguish disagreeable odors.

Hail Shadow Master!

We completely understand the distasteful situation that you find yourself in and can only assume that you are holding your noses and doing whatever you have to for short term security. If you are ever in need of a town or village in a fresher smelling region please let us know. I'm sure we can make accomodations.

P.S. You'll be the first to know if we make a breakthrough on that disinfectant.

WA -> DW

You'll be the second to know.
