Manaleshi if you do not want to put up your group stats for everyone I will be happy to break down the numbers for you. Just shoot me the make up of your group. A p1 in general is very dangerous to send into an encounter.

Oh... I don't mind. If it helps others understand I am fine.

I'm pretty much in the same frame of mind as Manaleshi, I'm using this game to get a feel for what the commands do in a scenario that allows me to make mistakes and not worry that the effects are going to ruin my game.  Like for instance this turn I learned that with a 180, you still need a general like you do with a 170. It probably says that somewhere in the commands but I missed it and wanted to try that bonus BL gets for threating. It failed and I ended up attacking.  All the info that's been posted for new players is a huge help too.  Many questions I might have had were answered by all the helpful guides.

As for me taking the Southern Sands on turn three, I think it is simply the movement ability of the BL that let me do that.  by the end of turn 2, using all 4 groups, raven familiar spells, and agents to recon, there weren't too many squares left untraveled.   Next kingdom I play I bet I'll think my groups are moving through molasses. Tongue

I do have a question that I read the answer to the other day but can't seem to find again.  We will be submitting turn 4, are high priests now available for purchase or is it after turn 4 and turn 5 when they can be picked up?

They can be purchased (and used) on turn 4

I also agree with the gnomes and dragons. This early in the game, mechanics are very low complexity and it's a good environment to try things out. I am sure that questions will start piling up as I start looking at military usage and whatnot.

Sorry for the delay been a busy Jump

For an easy encounter you need a minimum of 25 but likely best to go in with 50 points.   These are my guesses based on what I have found.  Remember you bring only 12 guys with you so military size does not matter.  Moral does though.

Leaders   Captain I.  +6
GN party. ~14 x 1.06 for moral = 15
Total 21. Without wizards

If your wizard goes in add another 8 would equal 29.  Not likely enough   You could choose to go in at a tactical selection of 3 and multiple by 1.25. For a total of 36 still risky of even having enough to meet the minimum needed to get the item and now putting your group at high risk of loosing the wizard and or leaders.

Here is the difficulty chart. Medium says average artifact but can actually be very useful.
Free________No risk (no leader promotion)____Recon won't show other criteria (like need to be an Evil kingdom to pick up Red Bats)
Easy________25-50 rating______Low grade artifact, may kill leader/wizard that's not protected
Medium _____51-75 rating______Average quality artifact
Hard________76-100 rating_____Decent artifact, will help you in the long run
Extreme_____101-150 rating____Uber artifact, go home if you're a Halfling without a siege machine

I sent you guys an article by Rick that does a great job explaining about artifact hunting.
-Basically leaders give the same points as they do for bonus in combat. A general would be +10
-Mages give between 5-10 points per level based on quality. if they use the 139 order or 1/2 if they use 101 spell.
My best guess is BL mages are 7, EL and GN 8 or 9, and DW well 5 or 6. WA likely 9 or 10 as with other pure mages.
-troop quality is another factor. Ranging from 12 to 20. My best guess BL 0, DW and EL 16 or 17, WA 13.

Another concern about these encounter is leaders and wizard will die. Wizards can protect themselves using the 101 spell. Death rates are rather high during these encounters more than in standard attacks. Modifier to death rate for kingdoms are as a percentage less chance to die. These can be found on Ry Vors chart on p29 of the 300 forum. BL 0, DW and EL -25%, WA 0. So much for being a dragon

Other artifacts can aid in these encounters as well. So weapons and wands add bonuses. Shields and armors can protect heroes.

Only comment is that I don't believe Morale is a factor in unusual sightings, as all patrols are set to 100% Morale.

I could be wrong on this, but I remember hearing that somewhere.

I am actually not sure on that my self. In clipper when you got or lost and artifact it effected moral but I have not seen that in the new engine. That would be an UM question. Maybe for his new thread.
To me it makes since your hand picked guys are the best to ones everyone looks up to. If they come back with some fancy new bling bling the masses will know and root and cheer over there victory. The same is true if these best of the best come back only 2 or 3 members left the camp will only have the loss of the heroes to think about.

Morale of a group investigating an unusual encounter is only applicable when a group isn't a patrol. If the group has troops, the 12 soldier contingent value is either boosted or lowered based upon the group's current morale. But even if the group had the maximum morale of 160, it's not that great of a factor for non-military types: 12 x 1 [for most kingdoms] x 1.6 = 19.2.

Unusual Encounters in all regards will be revised in The Choosing, and will be an area of increased emphasis..
