Teleportation Gates
#1
An interesting tidbit about the teleporter gates found as unusual sightings. Let's say you find an unusual sighting in (hypothetically) XW. You investigate it, and it is a portal to are (again hypothetically) ED. Your patrol uses the 716 order you have found out about, and goes through. Now you want to go back through...but you can't until you first investigate the unusual sighting in ED even though you just came through it. This sees a bit counter-intuitive, but cal live with it. Just don't plan on it working and makie 2 other orders contingent on the patrol being on the other side of the portal!

Oh, as an aside, the 716 movement order will move the group, but they stop at the uninvestigated portal.

why can't you just execute the 716 order again from the other side? What happened when that was done?

Yeah, I would think that you should be able to just turn around and go back.

I think it's a 726 order and I have used it in both directions while only investigating one end.

In one game I found two portals that exit at the same location. I am trying to determine if it's possble to choose which area to go back to or if the return trip is one-way.

Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. It is, in fact, a 726 order, not 716 (see how easy it is to screw up orders in the game Blush ?)

Here is what I got when I tried to go back through the gate:

Alone in his tent the commander pondered over his choice; should he move directly to his next objective or delay to explore the unknown and undoubtable dangerous sighting in area --?

You will get that, or something like it, whenever you sit outside an unusual sighting. Had you used a 726 movement order you would have moved right through the portal.

Personally, I consider portals to be big unusual sighting teases! I found three of the big disappointments in game 102.

I DID use the 726 order - the 716 was just a typo in an earlier message. I moved up to the gate, but not through it....and I think I found what happened.

I had not noticed in the description that moving through the portal costs 8 movement points and you aren't allowed to force march. I had used 14 getting to it apparently, so, no portal for me!

Not sure why it costs 8. I mean, I see it being a bottleneck for an army, but for a patrol, they just pop through. But then that would mean a coding headache so, eh, I can live with it.

No crisis here - move along...nothing to see!

Though I would lobby for the 726 and other "special" orders to be added to the Commands document. It's a pain having a separate document for one or two special orders.

Like many other things in Alamaze, this is left for you to discover. Back before the Internet every player would have to discover all these things on his own.

I remember selling setups for 5,000 gold each. A player would send me the money and I would mail him a print out. It made sense at the time considering how much the game cost to play. Now they are free to anyone. <sigh>

I dunno - having secret info like this just gives veteran players even more of an edge. In a game as complex as Alamaze, they have plenty of advantages already.

In general, if a game is fully or partially hand moderated (and thus probably has some strong RPG type elements), I support hidden, learned info. In a fully computer moderated game I think I prefer rules transparency.

Either way, it's still a very fun game Smile

It's a fine line between giving the veterans and edge and taking away the fun of discovery for new players. That's what these forums are for. If you know enough the ask the questions, you can get the answers. Not everything will be handed to you on a silver platter though.

I prefer the discovery aspect. I hope that we can add new, dfferent, and random elements for everyone to discover in future games. There is no reason that the veteran players can't enjoy that aspect of the game as well.
