Yep. It was a gamble. It worked.

Mainly because for him to not attack is counter-intuitive. Sure, his best bet there (unless the thought he could win both fights - and maybe he did think that) is to defend against 1AN and attack the pop center. To me, this is a flaw in the rules. Look, you are camped outside a walled town, and you know an enemy army is in te vicinity. If you assault the town, the army can take you in the rear and ruin your day. So you defend - fine. But you then can't use ALL of your troops to attack - some of them have to be defending. But the game doesn't work that way, which to me is a bit broken. I'd adjust it so that for every defend order you write for a group, any attack orders by that group are at -20% anyhow, to represent the troops that are securing the flanks and rear and not able to participate in storming the walls.

Per the rules: Important: A group may not retreat or defend against groups and subsequently attack or parley a population center in the same turn; nor investigate an unusual sighting.

So, in essence, he has to either attack or ignore the AN group.

Shoulda brushed up on the rulebook before I wrote that Smile But that makes more sense to me.

In Fall of Rome, you can't attack a pc until you have made the army outside the walls retreat. It's another example of how FoR evolved from Alamaze. I'm sure this will be addressed at some point in the future.

Please do not take any of my comments as a personal insult or as a criticism of the game 'Alamaze', which I very much enjoy. Rather, I hope that my personal insight and unique perspective may, in some way, help make 'Alamaze' more fun, a more successful financial venture, or simply more sustainable as a long-term project. Anyone who reads this post should feel completely free to ignore, disregard, scorn, implement, improve, dispute, or otherwise comment upon its content.

If you post the battle report, many others can share your joy. Smile

That would be disrespectful of the TR player, I think. I wasn't trying to rub it in...just more an observation that apparently, on tac 3, trolls will march over the bodies of their friends and die to the last scaly grunt.

Not disrespectful at all. I'm playing TR in 103 so I'd like too see what not to do. If it makes you feel more comfortable about doing it, I plan to post GI attack of my towns this turn as he is a big fan of these forums. Be a shame if UN found some easy targets....

ignoring would have left the troll open to an attack by you where he would have been listed as surprised.

I'm not sure but I think surprised is -25% modifier.

still would have been better.

Isn't surprised only for when you get ambushed?

Surprised is for when you don't issue a combat order and are attacked.

I checked the general rules to be sure. From the general rules:

Quote:Thus a group which intends to attack a population center must either attack or ignore (thereby
risking being surprised by an attack launched by the ignored group) any groups which may be
seeking to defend the population center (by engaging its would-be attackers).
Quote:A group which is attacked and has itself not ordered an attack or defense against the attacking
group is considered to be surprised, and fights at a 20% penalty to its "normal" value.

I assume that if the 2EL orders a delayed attack against the 3UN (111) and the 3UN attacks normally (110) before that, the 2EL isn't considered to be surprised?
