Mapping Basics

In various games from US and UK, I have seen reversed methods of mapping. Here, if a location is listed as BF, does that mean:

B = 2nd column on map
F = 6th row on map

ie... Left to Right then Up-Down

F _ X <== BF here #1 ?

I am assuming it is #1 (Left to Right)
